Shepherd School orchestra to play Carnegie Hall Oct. 28 (Rice News)

Jerome Hafter (1945 - 2016):
On September 23, Jerome “Jerry” Hafter passed away.  A lifetime resident of Greenville, MS, he graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Rice in 1967 where he was a 2-year golf letterman (1963-64).  Also, he was Student Association President and Hugh Scott Cameron Award winner as the Outstanding Rice Graduate of the Class of 1967. 

He was a Marshall Scholar at Oxford from 1967-68 and a earned a JD from Yale Law in 1972.  He enjoyed a legal career from 1974 to 2001 with Lake Tindall and thereafter with Phelps Dunbar.  Also, he served in a number of bar related leadership positions and he was active in the community.  He is survived by, among others, his wife Jocille.  Click here for the Jackson Clarion Ledger obituary.

James Laws MD (1939 - 2016):
James Laws recently passed away.  A native of Oklahoma, he earned a BA from Rice in 1961 and a MD from Baylor Medical School.  He enjoyed a career as a radiologist in California.  Also, he had a “stunning array of interests and talents” including cycling, water based sports, photography and writing.  He is survived by, among others, his wife of 55 years, Joyce.  Click here for The Sacramento Bee obituary.

Judith Cashen Allen (1939 - 2016):
On September 7, Judith Cashen Allen passed away.  A native of New Mexico, she graduated from Rice in 1961.  She served as a Cenacle Sister from 1963-1968 and she was co-owner of ABC (Allen Book Center) from 1980-1985.  She is survived by, among others, her husband Fred.  Click here for The Beaumont Enterprise obituary.

John Sealy Jockusch (1917 - 2016):
On September 4, John Sealy Jockusch passed away.  Born in Galveston, he attended Rice (class of 1941) and served 5 years in the Army.  He worked for Dittmar & Co (now Morgan Stanley) from 1950 until 2010 when he retired at the age of 93.  Also, he was very active in his church and in the community, including helping to form the United Way of Texas.  Click here for the San Antonio Express-News obituary.

Jan West '73:
Public Affairs' Jan West honored by Rice Board of Trustees (Rice News)

Bill Cooper (1923 - 2016):
On September 5, Bill Cooper passed away.  A native Nebraskan, he completed Rice in 1947 after military service.  He enjoyed a career with Humble Oil (nka ExxonMobil) for over 35 years until he retired in 1982.  He was married to his wife Grace for 68 over years.  Also, he supported many charities.  Click here for the Dallas Morning News obituary.
