Harry Gee, Jr. '60:
In October, Harry Gee, Jr. ’60 received an American Bar Association 2014 Difference Makers Award.  The “award recognizes an individual for his or her service in the local community”.  Read more.

Claire Smith '87 (Thanks, John Wolda '56!):
Last Wednesday, Claire Smith ’87, the chef-owner of Shade and Canopy, opened Woodbar, a coffeehouse adjacent to Canopy in Montrose.  Her parents are Pamela ‘55 and Dave Devine ‘53, a three-year baseball letterman (1950-51-52).  Read more.


Elsa Jean Daniels Horlock (1933 - 2014):
On December 19, Elsa Jean Daniels Horlock passed away.  She graduated from Rice in 1955 where she was Outstanding Senior, 1952 Homecoming Queen and 1954 Cotton Bowl Queen.  At Rice, she met Billy Ed Daniels ’53, a three-year football letterman (1950-51-52), and they were married in June 1955.  She was an advanced classical pianist, an accomplished tennis player and a private pilot.  Also, she was very active in the community and in Rice organizations including the boards of the Shepherd School and Fondren Library.

In 1989, Billy Ed Daniels passed away.  In 1996, she married Roy Horlock.  The memorial service is today at 11 am at Chapelwood United Memorial Church.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Last month, President Obama awarded a National Medal of Technology and Innovation to Mary Shaw ’65 for “pioneering leadership in the development of innovative curricula in Computer Science” at the White House.  View more.

Phillip Kusnetzky (1939 - 2014):
On December 9, Phillip Kusnetzky passed away.  A native Missourian, he received a BA from Rice in 1961 and a law degree from the University of Missouri in Columbia in 1965.  He was devoted to the legal profession, he was a leader in the local Jewish community and he was a life-long Rice Owls fan.  He is survived by, among others, his wife of 50 years, Cindy.  Click here for the Kansas City Star obituary.

Debra Lynn Jacquet (1956 - 2014):
On December 5, Debra Lynn Jacquet passed away after a brief illness.  A native Texan, she received a BA from Rice in 1978 and a MBA from UT in 1980.  She enjoyed a business career in New Orleans.  Also, she “had many interests and passions out of work” including being a dedicated sports fan, particularly of the New Orleans Saints and the Rice Owls baseball team.  She is survived by, among others, her husband since 1978, Tim Jacquet ’77.  Click here for the New Orleans Advocate obituary.

Sandee Torgrimson (1968 - 2014):
On October 20, Sandee Duncan Torgrimson passed away.  A native Oklahoman, she attended Rice (class of 1968) and graduated from Lincoln Law School in San Jose CA in 1991.  She worked for 20 years in the Santa Clara County DA’s office.  Also, she was active in the community.  Click here for the San Jose Mercury News obituary.

On November 28, Stuart Riggs MD passed away.  A native Texan, he attended the College of William and Mary, Rice (class of 1951) and UTMB Galveston.   He practiced medicine for 4 decades and was active in professional organizations.  Also, he had a facility for foreign languages, he was an expert photographer and an amateur pilot.  Click here for Chronicle obituary.
