On March 7, Mary Powell passed away.  A native Houstonian, she graduated from Rice in 1944.  She enjoyed a career in accounting, working for both the Fort Worth Club and Loma Plastics.  Also, she was “passionate about her family”.  Click here for the Dallas Morning News obituary.

On Sunday, bass-baritone Nick Brownlee (class of 2014) was named one of five grand prizewinners of the 2015 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in New York.  Read more.

Jack Crawford:
On February 27, Jack Crawford passed away at the age of 83.  A native of Missourian, he earned a bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma State in 1954, served in the military and then earned a master’s from Rice in 1959.  Both degrees were in Chemical Engineering.  He enjoyed a long and successful career with Mobil Oil.  Also, he was an enthusiastic golfer, with three holes-in-one to his name.  Click here for the Finger Lakes Times obituary.

Jim Whitson Jr (1944 - 2015):
On March 18, Jim Whitson Jr passed away.  He earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Rice in 1955.  He enjoyed a long career as an oilman, first at Pan Am and then as an independent oil operator beginning in 1962 until his final days.  He attended many Rice baseball games the last few years.  He was “a man of drive and ambition and a mentor to many”.   Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Death penalty lawyer backed in court fight (Houston Chronicle)

Wilbur "Dub" Tillett (1923 - 2015):
On March 5, Wilbur “Dub” Tillett passed away.  A native Texan, he attended Rice (class of 1944), served in WWII and then graduated from UT and South Texas College of Law.  He enjoyed a career in the oil business in Canada and Denver.  In retirement, he and his wife split their time between North Carolina and Main.  Click here for the Wilmington Star-News obituary.

Boniuk Center Lecture:
The next Boniuk Center lecture will be by Linell Cady, Professor of Religious Studies at Arizona State University, at noon (lunch reception at 11 am) next Monday, March 23 in the Kyle Morrow Road, Fondren Library.  The topic of her speech is “Escaping the Secularist Box: Religion and Spirituality in a global Age”.  The event is free and open to the public, with registration required.  Read more.
