Joseph Lockett III Capt (1939-2018):
On February 24, Joseph L Lockett III passed away.  A native Houstonian, he earned a BA I History from Rice in 1961 and then served in the US Navy until his retirement in 1990.  Also, he earned graduate degrees from the Naval Postgraduate School and Stanford.  Click here for the obituary.

Meterologist is no longer employed at Fox 26 (Houston Chronicle)

RADM Austin Scott Jr:
On March 14, Austin Scott Jr passed away at the age of 84.  A native Texan, he graduated from Rice in 1955.  He enjoyed 3 careers, the first with the Navy until 1985, the second in the civilian nuclear power industry and the third in community service in Aiken SC as Director of Social Services.  He is predeceased by, among others, his wife Susan (they were married in 1955 and she passed away in 1999 from cancer).  Click here for The State obituary.

Ruth Simmons:
Yesterday, Rice trustee Ruth Simmons was inaugurated as president of Prairie View A&M   David Leebron represented Rice.  Read more.

Mikki Hebl:
On Thursday night, the Houston Business Journal honored David Harvey Jr, chairman and CEO of DE Harvey Builders, with the 2018 Landmark Award for his lifetime achievement in real estate.  He is married to Mikki Hebl, the Martha and Henry Malcolm Lovett Chair of Psychology.  Read more.

Elaine Swank (1933-2018):
On April 17, Elaine Swank passed away.  She was the wife, mother and grandmother, respectively, of three Rice Chemical Engineers, Jack ’55, John ’85 and Lisa ’15.  Also, her daughter-in-law Linda Swank is a Rice alum (MBA ’89) as well as her late daughter, Susan Swank (’86).  Lisa regularly competes for Will Rice as a cyclist in the Beer Bike race.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Ramon Gonzalez:
Ramon Gonzalez Named AIMBE Fellow (Rice News)

Patrick Redman (1953-2108):
On February 13, Patrick “Patchy” Redman passed away.  A native Texan, he earned a BA in Philosophy from Rice in 1976 and a JD from UT in 1981.  Other family members with Rice ties include his ex-wife Ann Dingus ’75 and their two sons, Philip ’07 and the late Parker (class of 2008).  He practiced law in the public and private sector in Austin.  Also, he loved cooking, golf and bridge.  To compensate for the fact that his December birthday conflicted with Christmas, he would throw himself “surprise” parties.  Click here for the Austin American-Statesman obituary
