Richard Braman (1930 - 2016):
On March 21, Richard “Dick” Braman passed away.  A native of Ohio, he earned BA and BS degrees in Architecture from Rice in 1953.  After military service, he enjoyed a 50-year career as an independent architect in the greater Denver area.  Also, he loved all sports, especially the Denver Broncos and golf. Nancy Akers, the wife of longtime Rice professor Bill Akers, has passed away.  She was a founding member of the Shepherd Society and supported the Shepherd School through scholarships.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

32rd Planetary Congress:
In October 2019, the 32rd Planetary Congress, the largest gathering of space explorers in the world, will take place at Rice and other locations in Houston to honor the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing.  Read more.

John Baird III (1939 - 2016):
On July 19, John Baird III passed away.  A lifelong Houston resident, he attended Rice (class of 1961) and earned a Chemical Engineering degree from UH in 1964.  He “was a passionate photographer, birder, camper, world traveler, and coin collector, but his primary enthusiasm was Rice University athletics in all forms”.  He could be found at almost every Rice sporting event male or female.  He is survived by, among others, his wife of almost 40 years, Jane.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary

Horace Staph (1921 - 2016):
On July 1, Horace Staph passed away.  A native Texan, he earned degrees from Rice in 1943, UT  Austin in 1949 and the University of Minnesota in 1959.  He “taught engineering courses at UT Austin (1946-1960) until moving to San Antonio to work at Southwest Research Institute where he work until his retirement in 1986”.  Also, he was active in the community and in his church.  Click here for the San Antonio Express-News obituary.

Rice lab discovers super hard titanium-gold alloy (Rice News)

Jonathon Pendergrass (1949 - 2016):
On June 13, Jonathon “Jon” Pendergrass passed away.  Raised on a ranch in Eagle Lake, he earned a BA in Spanish from Rice in 1971 and a MD from LSU Medical School in 1979.  He was a dedicated doctor for nearly 30 years to the Mobile community at the Alabama Clinic for Plastic Surgery  He “was a brilliant mind, coupled with an indelibly hard-working spirit”.  Click here for the Mobile Register obituary.
