What's In Woodson:
Ralph Anderson, Jr (1923-1990) (Woodson Research Center)

John McGill (1950-2017):
On December 7, John McGill passed away after a short illness.  A native Pennsylvanian, he earned a BA in History from Rice in 1973 and a JD from UT Law in 1976.  He enjoyed a legal practice in Austin for many years.  Also, he was an avid fan of Rice Athletics, especially baseball.  He came to Houston for almost all home games and made it to Omaha every time the Owls advanced to the College World Series, including 2003.  He is survived by, among others, his wife Ann (they were married in 2004).

A celebration and memorial will be held Saturday, December 16, 2 pm at the First Unitarian Universalist Church, 4700 Grover Avenue, Austin.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial gifts be designated to the Owl Club.  Click here for the Austin American-Statesman obituary.

Kathleen Boyd
’80, CMO, Houston Airport System, will be the guest speaker at the American Marketing Association monthly luncheon in the Woodlands next Wednesday.  She recently won the 2017 SYSCO Marketing Innovator Award.  Read more and/or register here.

Mary Jane Tanguy (1925-2017):
Over the Thanksgiving holiday, Mary Jane Tanguy passed away.  A native Houstonian, she graduated from Rice in 1945 with a major in French.  Her “primary occupation became that of a wife and mother” while “remaining constantly active” in the community.  She is predeceased by, among others, her husband of 58 years Denis. Nest 360's low-cost jaundice detector passes first test in Africa (Rice News)

Allen Lubbock Lewis (1924-2017):
On November 30, Allen Lubbock Lewis passed away.  A native Houstonian, he was a descendent of Frances R Lubbock, the ninth Governor of the State of Texas.  He earned a BS in Chemical Engineering from Rice in 1944 and was a golf letterman.  He enjoyed a career as a process engineer.  Also, he was an avid fan of Rice baseball and was active in his church.  He is survived by, among others, his wife of 69 years, Martha.  Click here for the obituary.

Katheryn Jones (1929-2017):
Over the Thanksgiving holiday, Katheryn Jones passed away.  A native Houstonian, she attended Rice (class of 1949) and earned a BS (’49) and a MS (’51) at UH and a MS in Public Health (’75) at UT Health Center.  She “was a devoted wife and mother and also pursued her own career” as a classroom educator.  She is survived by, among others, her husband of 63 years, Walter.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Vick GIles (1945-2017):
On November 26, Vick Giles passed away.  A native Houstonian, he earned a BA (’68), a Bachelor of Architecture (’69) and a MBA (’80) from Rice.  He enjoyed a successful career in architecture with Neuhaus & Taylor (later named 3D International) in Houston.  Also, he was passionate about space exploration, physics and astronomy, among other things.  Click here for the obituary.

William Akers (1922-2017):
As reported, Dr William Akers passed away on November 5.  He “was a distinguished chemical engineer, serving Rice University as Professor and Vice President of Administration for 47 years” Also, he “was a key participant in the project (at Rice) to develop an artificial human heart with Dr Michael DeBakey”. 

A celebration of his life will be held on Thursday, December 7 at 2 pm at St Martins Episcopal with reception to follow.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Bob Floyd (1939-2017):
On November 18, Bob Floyd passed away.  A native Tennessean, he earned a BA in Economics from Rice in 1961.  After naval service, he returned to Rice and earned a PhD in Economics in 1971.  He enjoyed a career with the Federal Reserve Bank in Atlanta and the IMF in Alexandria, VA until he retired in 1998.  Also, he was an accomplished pianist.  Click here for The Daily News Journal obituary.

Bob Saldich (1933-2017):
Bob Saldich has passed away in Palo Alto.  A native New Yorker, he earned a BA (’55) and  BS (“56) in Chemical Engineering from Rice as well as a MBA (’61) from Harvard.  From 1964 until 1995, he worked for Raychem including serving as President and CEO.  Also, he was the former Chairman of The Commonwealth Club of California and the American Electronics Association.  In 2006, he received an ARA Distinguished Alumni Award for accomplishments in business and public service.  Click here for the San Francisco Chronicle obituary.

Paul Chapman (1953-2017):
On Wednesday (November 30), Paul Chapman passed away after a brief struggle with cancer.  A native Houstonian, he graduated from Rice ('75), like his parents Erminie ’54 and the late David ’53.  And, he graduated from the Wharton School of Finance in 1979.  After a career in real estate and property management, he joined Belmont Village as Chief Development Officer and founding partner in 1996.  Also, he was active in the community.  He is survived by, among others, his wife of 35 years, Cathy. 

A memorial service will be held at 3 pm tomorrow (December 2) at the Great Hall of St. John’s School.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.
