Wesley Wallace (1950 - 2015):
On May 10, Dr Wesley Wallace passed away after a year fighting cancer.  A native New Yorker, he received a BA from Rice in 1972 and a masters and PhD from the University of Washington in 1976 and 1981, all in Geology.  After working for Arco Alaska, he was a member of the faculty of the University of Alaska Fairbanks for 30 years and was recognized as a world-class field geologist.  Click here for the Daily News-Miner obituary.

Maribel McCleary (1924 - 2015):
On May 19,, Maribel McCleary passed away.  A native Texan, she graduated from Rice in 1944 and went to work for Humble Oil.  She was married to her first husband, John McCleary, for 45 years until he died in 1991.  Later, she married Thomas Adkins, MD, who predeceased her.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Rice recruits cancer recruiter from Harvard with CPRIT grant (Rice News)

Arnold "Sonny" Ahrens (1940 - 2015):
On Sunday, Arnold “Sonny” Ahrens passed away from a sudden acute illness at the age of 74.  A native Texan, he earned a BA from Rice in 1962 and a MBA from UH in 1982.  From 1966 until 1999, he enjoyed a career with UH and then worked for Houston Auto Auction as a title liaison.  Also, he was an longtime Rice baseball fan, sitting in Section B.

A memorial service will be held this Friday at 11 am at the West University United Methodist Church, 3611 University Blvd.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Jones School:
Six professors recognized with teaching honors (Rice News)

Donald Braendle (1927 - 2015):
On May 13, Dr Donald Braendle passed away.  A native New Yorker, he earned a BA from Rice in 1952 and a PhD from Rutgers in 1957.  He worked for Abbott Laboratories for 33 years doing microbial genetic research.  Also, he enjoyed flying his single engine Piper aircraft, growing dahlias and building model sailing ships and airplanes.  He is survived by, among others, his wife of 58 years, Carolyn.  Click here for the Chicago Tribune obituary.

Milton Shoss (1923 - 2015):
On May 6, Dr Milton Shoss passed away.  Born a first generation American, he graduated from  Rice in 1946 and Baylor Medical School in 1947.  He founded Shoss Radiology Group in Cape Girardeau Missouri where he and his family lived for 36 years.  He is predeceased by, among other, his wife of 59 years, Jane.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Zubarev wins Humboldt Foundation's Bessel Award (Rice News)

Jack Carsten (1926 - 2015):
On May 3, Jack Carsten passed away.  A native Houstonian, he started Rice, served in WWII and returned to graduate with a BS in Mechanical Engineering in 1947.  He enjoyed a career with Reed Roller Bit and Cameron Iron Works in the United States and Europe.  He “loved the outdoors; he was an avid hunter and took up skiing hi his early 70’s”.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Byron Wright (1917 - 2015):
On April 9, Dr Byron Wright passed away.  A native Texan, he earned a BA from Rice in 1938 and a PhD from Cal Berkley in 1941 in Physics. During WWII, he worked on the Manhattan Project.  In 1946, he began his longtime association with UCLA, first as a professor.  In 1972, he became an Associate Dean of the Graduate Division where he remained until his retirement.  Click here for The Los Angeles Times obituary.

Daniel McGown Jr (1943 - 2015):
On April 28, Daniel McGown Jr passed away.  He graduated from Sewanee in 1965 and from Rice in 1969 with a degree in architecture.  In 1977, he moved to Nashville where he practiced architecture until he retired.  Click here for The Tennessean obituary.
