Algernon Badger (1925 - 2016):
On April 22, Algernon Badger passed away.  A native Houstonian, after WWII military service he earned BS (1948), MS (1949) and PhD (1963) degrees in Electrical Engineering from Rice.  He enjoyed a career “as a research scientist”, traveling “around the world representing American exploration technology”.  Also, he was a member of several professional organizations.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Accelerate Learning:
Yesterday, Accelerate Learning, founded at Rice University, announced that it has raised $10 million in Series A funding from Owl Ventures.  Read more.

Luisetta Chomel (1931 - 2016):
On May 20, Luisetta Chomel passed away.  A native Italian, she received her BA from the University of St. Thomas and her master’s (1972) in French and PhD (1975) from Rice.  She enjoyed an almost 30 year career at the University of Houston, beginning in 1972 as an instructor in Italian and then as Director of Italian Studies.  In 1994, she won the Master Teacher Award.

A memorial service will be held at noon on Saturday, May 28 at Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Dave Chapman (1931 - 2016):
On May 1, Dave Chapman passed away.  A native Pennsylvanian, he earned a BS in Architecture from Rice in 1953.   At Rice, he met and married Erminie Chambers ’54.  He enjoyed a lifelong career in construction.  Also, he was active in his church and in the community.  He is survived by, among others, his wife of 64 years, Erminie.  Click here for Chronicle obituary.

On May 4, Opal Sumners passed away.  A native of Louisiana, she graduated from Rice in 1943.  In 1946, she married Pete Sumners and they raised a family and worked together.  Also, she was very active in her church and in the community.  She is survived by, among others, her husband.  Click here for The Lufkin Daily News obituary.

Jack Kraft (1924 - 2016):
On April 21, Jack Kraft passed away.  A native Texan, he earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering in 1950 from Rice where he played football his freshman year.  After military service and working for years in steel building construction and large steel forging, he was project manager for Gilbane Construction until he retired at the age of 75.  He is predeceased by, among others, his wife of 62 years, Beverly.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

James Christopher (1930 - 2016):
On April 12, James Christopher passed away.  A native Pennsylvanian, he earned a Bachelor of Architecture from Rice in 1953 and a Master’s Degree from MIT in 1956.  After military service in the Korean War, he began teaching at the University of Utah School of Architecture and in 1963 he co-founded Brixen & Christopher Architects.  He is survived by, among others, his wife of 61 years, Carolyn.  Click here for the Salt Lake Tribune obituary.
