The trivia answer is the late J Fred Duckett ’55, “whose voice provided the soundtrack for Rice Athletics for over 50 years and whose encyclopedic knowledge of Rice sports history and devotion to this university were unmatched”.  On June 25, 2007, he passed away.  Tomorrow, Rice hosts the annual J Fred Duckett Twilight Meet.  (Thanks, Mike Ross ‘70/’74!)

Guest Trivia Answer:
Upon further review, it turns out that the Midtown Sears site was not bequeathed to Rice but instead was acquired by Rice in a sale/leaseback transaction with Sears in the 1940s.  The store opened for business in 1939.  (Thanks, Scott Wise ’71!)

Under the circumstances, I am tossing out the trivia question.  My apologies for the confusion.
