Four musicians chosen for Global Academy Fellowship Program (Rice News)

On Thursday, February 5 at 7 pm, author David Heymann will visit and sign “My Beautiful City Austin” at Brazos Bookstore.  Read more. 

Charles Crain (1933 - 2015):
On January 23, Charles (“Charlie”) Crain passed away.  He graduated from Rice in 1955.  After military service, he enjoyed a career in chemical engineering with Shell, Tenneco and Enterprise Products until retiring in 2006.  He was a Rice football season ticket holder.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

WISE lunch celebrates three honorees (Houston Chronicle)

Gabi Chennisi '12:
Last night, Clinger premiered at the Slamdance Film Festival in Park City, UT.  The indie horror-comedy was written by Gabi Chennisi (Rice ’12), Bubba Fish (USC ‘13) and Michael Steves (Wesleyan ’13).  Read more. 

Eleanor Vaughan (1916 - 2015):
Eleanor (Stevens) Vaughan passed away.  A native Texan, she graduated from Rice in 1937 with a degree in architecture.  Her husband Herschel worked for Gulf Oil and they lived in Texas, Pennsylvania and England.   Her interests ranged from gardening, educational courses, travel abroad, flying lessons to various computer skills.  Also, she was very active in her church and the community.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Baker Institute among top 10 university-affiliated think tanks in world (Rice News)

Horace Shearin (1922 - 2015):
On January 12, Horace “Johnny” Shearin passed away.  A native Kentuckian, he completed his studies in chemical engineering at Rice in 1948 after military service in WWII.   He enjoyed a career with Humble Oil Refining & Oil, Core Laboratories and SPG Exploration, retiring in 1988. Charles Boozer (1927 - 2014):
On January 13, Charles Boozer passed away.  A native Texan, he earned degrees from Stephen F Austin in 1949 and Rice in 1951 and 1953.  He enjoyed the outdoors and camping.  He is survived by, among others, his wife of 61 years, Edwina ’51.  Click here for The Advocate obituary.

Charles Renfro
'87 is an honoree for the 2015 Texas Medal of Arts Award.  Another honoree is Dan Rather, brother of former Rice football player Don Rather '61.  Read more.

Robert Herlin '77/'78 has joined the board of ENSERVCO.  Read more.

Bruce Jackson (1041 - 2015):
On January 5, Bruce Jackson passed away.  A native Texan, he graduated Magna Cum Laude from Rice in 1963.  He enjoyed a career as a CPA in Beaumont his entire adult life.  Also, he was active in the community.  He is survived by, among others, his wife of 47 years, Jimmie Jay.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Mary Jane Ellis Goff (1925 - 2015):
On January 15, Mary Jane Ellis Goff passed away.  A native Houstonian, she graduated from Rice in 1946, as her father AB Ellis had done in 1923.   She married fellow Rice student Bobby Goff ’47 in 1947, who survives her.   She had many interests during her life including history, cooking, gardening and she was an expert seamstress.   Also, she was an active Rice alumnus and was involved in her church and in the community.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Frank Hubert (1941 - 2015):
On January 12, Frank Hubert passed away of Parkinson’s disease.  A native Texan, he graduated from Rice in 1963 and UT Law in 1966.  He was an internationally known real estate and oil & gas lawyer with Baker Botts for 34 years and headed huge projects in Russia and Azerbaijan for clients of the Firm.   Although he was a quiet man, he came from a musical family and loved to sing, especially rock and country music.  He was an amazing performer as “Hank” Hubert, channeling (among others) Elvis.  He is survived by, among others, his wife of 34 years, Cynthia.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Rory Trup (1953 - 2015):
On January 3, Rory Trup passed away.  After graduating from Rice in 1976 , he returned to California.  He was self-employed and was active in his church.  Until his illness in 2000, he was an avid runner and a Jaguar enthusiast.  He is survived by, among other, his wife Gina.  Click here for the San Diego Union-Tribune obituary.
