Suzanne Morris (1922 - 2016):
 On August 18, Suzanne “Susie” Morris passed away.  A native of Ohio, she graduated from Wellesley College in 1944. Against her parent’s wishes, she married Lt. Seth Irwin Morris, Jr. (Rice ’35) to “follow the fellow who follows a dream”  after the war ended in 1945.  They were married 60 years until he passed away in 2006.  She was “a vivacious hostess and excellent chef”, she “loved people and she loved life” and she was very active in the community.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

This Thursday (September 1) from 4-6 pm, the SI and Susie Morris Lounge will be dedicated in conjunction with the opening of the Rice School of Architecture Student Summer Fellowship Travel exhibition.  The dedication will take place in the Smith Courtyard and Farish Gallery, Anderson Hall and everyone is invited to attend.  Read more.

Wayne Hubbell:
On August 10, Wayne Hubbell passed away at the age of 72.  He earned his BS and MS in Physics from LSU New Orleans and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Rice in 1972.  He “enjoyed gardening, fishing, LSU baseball & football and spending time with his wife, children and their spouses, grandchildren and extended family”.  Click here for the New Orleans Advocate obituary. 
 

Claire Smith '87:
The latest Houston Business Journal (August 26-September 1) features an interview with Claire Smith '87, the owner and founder of Shade, Canopy and Woodbar (P. 35A, subscription content).  She is the daughter of Pamela '55 and the late Tom Smith '51 who passed away in 1999.  In 2003, Pamela married Dave Devine '53, a three-year baseball letterman (1950-51-52).

Top 100 American films of 21st Century:
This week, the BBC released its list of top 100 American films of the 21st century.  The list includes 2 films by Rick Linklater, no. 5 “Boyhood” and no. 73 “Before Sunset” and 3 films by Wes Anderson, no. 21 “The Grand Budapest Hotel”, no. 68 “The Royal Tenenbaums” and no. 95 “Moonrise Kingdom”.

Rick Linklater is the uncle of Rice pitcher Jackson Parthasarathy and Wes Anderson is the son of avid Rice baseball fan Texas Anderson ‘81/’85.

Ned Thomas:
Thomas to complete service as dean at end of academic year (Rice News)

Rev Eric Schulze (1934 - 2016):
On August 8, the Rev Eric Schulze passed away.  A native Texan, he received his BA from Texas Lutheran College in 1955 and a Master’s of Divinity degree from Wartburg Theological Seminary in 1959 and he pursued additional graduate study at the University of Erlangen and at Rice (class of 1960).  He was ordained in 1961 and served as pastor in San Antonio and Richland Hills.  Also, he was active in the community.  Click here for the Star-Telegram obituary.

Shepherd School:
Incoming MM student Alexa Thomson won the Wellington Arts Excellence Award.  The award “supports young New Zealanders of outstanding ability in the performing arts who are preparing for a professional career”.  Read more.

Margaret Moul:
On March 7, Margaret Moul passed away.  A native Houstonian, she graduated from Rice in 1944. She was very active in her church including teaching children in the church school for 30 years and serving as a ruling elder.  Also, she was active in the community and she was an avid traveler.  She is survived by, among others, her husband Martin.  Click here for the Daily Press obituary.

Derald Glidden (1943 - 2016):
On March 16, Derald Glidden passed away.  A native of Missouri, he earned a BA in English from Rice in 1965 and a graduate degree from Cal Berkeley in 1972.  He worked for American Analysis and Bechtel Power and he was a consultant.  Also, he and his wife Bridget, who survives him, enjoyed traveling in Europe and America.  They were married in 1965.  Click here for the San Francisco Chronicle obituary
