According to a list authored by the NAI and IPO, Rice was tied for no. 79 with 34 patents among the top 100 worldwide universities granted US utility patents in 2017.  Read more.

Andy Lang '10/PhD '13:
Andy Lang ‘10/PhD ’13 is the 2018 recipient of the $50,000 Tom Watson Brown Book Award for his book “In The Wake of War; Military Occupation, Emancipation, and Civil War America”.  Among others, he credits his success to John Boles, director of his doctoral dissertation on which the book is based, as well as his Rice doctoral committee: Ira Gruber, W Caleb McDaniel and Richard Stoll.  Read more.

Carol Mann (1941-2018):
On May 20, Carol Mann, golf star and LPGA Hall of Famer, passed away at her home in The Woodlands.  She was a member of the Rice Women’s Athletics Advisory Board and was active in the golf tournament, serving as honorary chair for years.  Click here for the New York Times obituary.

The Houston Chronicle announced yesterday that Evan Mintz ’08 will serve as deputy opinion editor.  Read more. 

William "Bill" Mulvaney (1934-2018):
On May 22, Bill Mulvaney passed away.  A native Pennsylvanian, he attended UT and Rice (class of 1956).  He was an engineer in the Petro-Chemical industry for over 30 years, mostly with ABB Lummis Crest..  He is survived by, among others, his wife of 56 years Marjorie.  Click here for The Chronicle obituary.

Madelyn Pert Turner:
On May 16, Madelyn Pert Turner passed away at the age of 70.  Born and raised in Indiana, he earned a BA from Mt Holyoke in 1969 and a MA (1974) and an PhD (1982) from Rice, all in French.  She spent over 15 years in the Fairfax County VA Public School system as a high school French teacher and school counselor.  Also, she was active in the community and in her church.  Click here for The Indianapolis Star obituary.

Seiichi Matsuda:
Matsuda reappointed dean of graduate and postdoctoral studies (Rice News)

Gilbert Tausch (1926-2018):
On April 13, Gilbert Tausch passed away.  A native Texan, he earned a BA in Mechanical Engineering from Rice in 1947 following military service in the Navy during WWII.  He was an accomplished engineer who worked for Humble Oil and Camco International.  His first wife Ann Tausch, who earned a MA in History from Rice in 1950, passed away on December 5, 2017.  He is survived by, among others, their son Dr. Gilbert Tausch ’77.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary
