Dick Roy:
On January 11, Dick Roy passed away.  A native of Wisconsin, he attended Rice (class of 1980) and earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin in 1982 and a MBA from the University of Michigan in 1988.  We worked for a number of medical device companies.  Also, he was active in his church.  His is survived, by among others, his wife Martha (they were married in 1982).  Click here for Milwaukee Journal Sentinel obituary.

College Masters:
Administration to announce 'masters' title replacement (The Rice Thresher)

Myrl Miller:
On Christmas Day 2016, Myrl Miller passed away.  He earned an undergraduate degree from Rice in 1959 and a Master’s from MIT in 1962, both in Mechanical Engineering.  He enjoyed a long career with IBM in Lexington KY where he worked on the design of the IBM Selectric typewriter and in Boulder CO.  Also, he was “accomplished mountain climber, skier, and bicyclist”.  Click here for The Daily Camera obituary.

Scientist sets her sights on outer space (ARA)

Ruth Goines (1921 - 2017):
On January 10, Ruth Goines passed away.  A native Houstonian and a 5th generation Texan, she graduated from Rice in 1943.  With her husband Bill, she lived in Mississippi and Houston before settling down with their family in Austin.  He passed away in 1970.  Her “three loves were her boys, her cats, and her pecans, not always in that order”.  Click here for the Austin American-Statesman obituary.

Nobel Laureate Lecture Series, March 28:
The Rice Initiative for the Study of Economics (RISE) and the Office of the President are pleased to welcome NYU Professor A Michael Spence to Rice on Tuesday, March 28 at 5 pm to discuss “The Multiple Challenges to Achieving Shared Prosperity and Political/Social Cohesion Across the Globe: A Time of Expanded Opportunities and Heightened Risks”.  The lecture is free and open to the public but please RSVP as space is limited.  Read more.

Nobel laureate lectures during visit to Rice (Rice News)

Molly Dolan (1974 - 2017):
On January 7, Molly Dolan passed away.  A native of Alaska, she graduated from Rice in 1996 with a BA in English and from the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign with a Master’s in 2004.  She worked in Dallas, New York, Champaign and finally in West Virginia as the Digital Initiatives and Scholarly Communications Librarian at WVU.  Also, she was a world traveler.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Last month, Houston Woman Magazine named Rice Provost Marie Lynn Miranda one of “Houston’s 50 Most Influential Women of 2016”.  Recently, she was interviewed by Rice Magazine here.

Walter Buenger '73 (Thanks, Barbara Eaves!):
Walter Buenger ’73 is the Chief Historian of the Texas State Historical Association effective July 1, 2017, with duties to edit the Southwestern Historical Quarterly.  Also, he assumes the Summerlee Foundation Chair in Texas History/Barbara Stuart Centennial Professorship in Texas History at the University of Texas Austin.  On June 1, 2017, he leaves Texas A&M after 38 years.

Kenneth Kurtz (1934 - 2017):
On  March 17, Kenneth Kurtz passed away.  A native Texan, he attended Rice (class of 1956) and graduated from UH with an Industrial Engineering degree in 1957.  After working for several manufacturing companies, he started his own company, Houston Foam Plastics, in 1970.  Also, he was active in the community and in his church.  He is predeceased by, among others, his wife Mary Lou.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.
