O-Week 2014 is an unconventional welcome to Rice (Rice News)

Liz Holzman (1953 - 2014):
On August 11, Liz Holzman passed away.  A native Californian, she graduated from Mills College in 1975 with a BA in Art, attended a night class in animation at Rice in 1976 and earned a MFA in Film Graphics from Cal Arts in 1979.  For the next 25 years, she worked in the animation industry in Los Angeles.  She was a three-time Daytime Emmy Award winner.  Click here for The Hollywood Reporter obituary.

Rice physicist emerges as leader in quantum materials research (Rice News)

Donald Norton (1931 - 2014):
On May 26, Donald Norton passed away.  A native Illinoisan, he graduated from Rice in 1956 and earned his DDS from UT Dental Branch in Houston.  After military service, he maintained a private dental practice until he retired.  Also, he was an avid reader.  Click here for the San Antonio Express-News obituary.

Hugh Welsh Jr (1934 - 2014):
On Wednesday, Hugh Welsh Jr passed away.  A native Houstonian, he graduated from Rice in 1956.  He retired from American National Insurance Company as Chief Underwriter in 1999.  He was a lifelong Rice fan.  He is survived by, among others, his wife of 43 years, Connie.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Blair Justice (1927 - 2014):
On August 20, Blair Justice passed away.  A native Texan, he served in WWII, earned an undergraduate degree from UT and graduate degrees from TCU, Columbia and Rice (1966).  He was a licensed clinical psychologist, professor, journalist and writer of books.  Also, he was a longtime patient advocate volunteer for MD Anderson Cancer Center.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Rice chemist wins 'Nobel Prize of Cyprus' (Rice News)

Maurine Sullender (1918 - 2014):
On August 7, Maurine “Myrrh” Sullender passed away.  A native Texan, she graduated from Rice in 1939.  In June 1941, she married Maurice Sullender, a fellow classmate, whom she met at a Rice football game and they were married 56 years until his death.  She was a teacher, both for HISD and her church.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.
