Mary Pack (1928-2017):
On September 18, Mary Pack passed away.  A native Houstonian, she attended Rice (class of 1949) where she met her husband of 68 years, Charles Pack (class of 1950).  She taught for many years in the Pasadena Independent School District.  Also, she was active in her church and in the community.  Click here for The Pasadena Citizen obituary.

Moody Center earns architectural award (Rice News)

Betty Broyles-Pettey (1924-2017):
On September 14, Betty Broyles-Pettey passed away.  A native Houstonian, he graduated from Rice in 1945 where she met her first husband, the late Bill Broyles ’48 (he passed away in 1996).  Their son, Bill Broyles, the founding editor of Texas Monthly, also graduated from Rice (in 1966).  Thirteen years ago, she met her second husband, Jesse Pettey, who survives her. “She was a special human being, an exemplary wife and a great mother, but she was born to be a grandmother”.  Click here for the Austin American-Statesman obituary.

Pat Cauley (1937-2017):
On September 14, Pat Cauley passed away.  A native Texan, she graduated from Rice in 1959.  She was married for 56 years to the late Jim Cauley ’58 who played baseball and football for Rice.  She enjoyed a teaching career including teaching English at Robert E Lee High School in Baytown for 20 years. Also, she was active in her church and in the community.  Click here for the obituary.

San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg recently named Marisa Bono '01 as chief of policy.  Read more.

Charles McClelland (1943-2017):
On August 21, Charles McClelland passed away.  A native of Arkansas, he earned a BA from the University of Colorado Boulder and he attended Rice (class of 1965) and UT Austin for graduate work.  From 1988 until his retirement in 1999, he worked as a mathematics editor at Holt, Rinehart & Winston.  “Astrology and philosophy were the twin passions of his life”.  He is survived by, among others, his wife Kathy.  Click here for the Austin American-Statesman obituary.

William Marsh Rice:
117th anniversary of a murder (The Baytown Sun)

Dr Otis "Gene" Byrd Jr (1943-2017):
On August 19, Dr Otis “Gene” Byrd Jr passed away.  He earned a Bachelor’s degree from Lamar University and a Masters degree from Rice (1969) in Mechanical Engineering and a PhD in Engineering from Lamar University.  He was most recently an assistant professor at Lamar State College in Port Arthur.  He is survived by, among others, his wife Sally.  Click here for the Beaumont Enterprise obituary.

Tracy Park (1922-2017):
On August 7, Tracy Park passed away.  A native Texan, he earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Rice in 1943.  After military service, he enjoyed a “long successful” career with Tenneco.  In retirement, he was active in the community.  He is survived by, among others, his wife Eila.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.
