Dick Bowen (1935-2017):
On July 4, Dick Bowen passed away.  A native Texan, he earned a BA in History from Rice in 1957.  After military service, he worked for PPG Industries in Texas and Ohio.  Also, he was active in his church and in the community.  After retirement in 1993, he enjoyed life at his ranch property in the Hill Country.  Click here for the San Angelo Standard-Times obituary.

Thomas Hopkins III (1915-2017):
On June 7, Thomas Hopkins III passed away.  Born in Washington DC, he earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Rice in 1949.  After military service, he enjoyed a career with JT Thorpe for 52 years as an engineer.  Click here for the Houston Chronicle obituary.

Baileson Brewing, co-owned by Adam Cryer ’01, hopes to open for business on Saturday, September 2 at 2322 Bissonnet in the Rice Village area.

Dr Richard Marshall (1935-2017):
On July 2, Dr Richard Marshall passed away.  He earned a BA in Chemistry from Rice in 1957 and a PhD from Ohio State in 1962.  He last lived in Sandy Hook, KY. Click here for the obituary.

Five questions for Yael Hochberg (Xconomy)

Bob Norris (1936-2017):
On June 29, Bob Norris passed away.  A native of Arkansas, he attended Rice (class of 1958) and graduated from Oklahoma State in 1959.  He enjoyed a sales career with Caterpillar and Ingersoll Rand.  Also, he was very active in OSU alumni affairs.  He was predeceased by, among others, his wife Kay.  Click here for The Oklahoman obituary.

Rice ranked best college in Texas by Money magazine (Rice News)

Anne Stoops (1942-2017):
On June 21, Anne Stoops passed away.  A “loyal daughter of Texas with roots going back 200 years” but born in Washington DC, she earned a BA in German from Rice in 1964.  A full-time mother, she also enjoyed substitute teaching, math tutoring and helping clients with “IRS reporting and the intricate (legal) tricks of the trade”.  She is survived by, among others, her husband of  52 years, Glenn.  Click here for the Dayton Daily News obituary.

The Harm of Medical Debt (All Things Considered)

Sonny McCurry (1930-2017):
On August 3, Sonny McCurry passed away.  A native Texan, he attended Rice (class of 1952) where he was a three-year football letterman (1949-50-51).  He was chosen to play in the 1951 East-West Shrine game.  After military service, he worked for Mueller Brass for 27 years until his retirement in 1992.  Also, he was an avid golfer.  He is survived by, among others, his life partner of 34 years, Susanne.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

John W Clark Jr (1936-2017):
On August 6, John W Clark Jr passed away.  After military service, he earned a BS in Electrical Engineering from Christian Brothers College in 1962, a MS in Electrical Engineering from Case Institute of Technology in 1965 and a PhD in Engineering from Case Western Reserve in 1967.  He was a Professor at Rice for 49 years.  Also, he served as Master of Sid Richardson College in the mid-eighties where “he shepherded undergraduates into adulthood no matter how unwilling they were at the time”.  He is survived by, among others, his wife of 61 years, Kit.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Janet Schmidt:
On June 20, Janet Schmidt passed away at the age of 88.  Born in Houston, she earned a BA from Rice in 1952 and a Masters in Education from the University of Pittsburgh in 1957.  She enjoyed careers as a teacher and as a real estate broker.  Also, she was active in her church.  She is survived by, among others, her husband of 65 years, Eldon.  Click here for The Wayland Town Crier obituary.
