Trivia Answer:
The Allen Center for Business Activities was named after Helen ‘28 and Herbert Allen ’29, the inventor of the screwpull corkscrew and a mechanical engineer.  He enjoyed a 60-year career with Cameron Iron Works including serving as President and Chairman of the Board.  Also, he was a member of the Rice Board of Governors and a Chairman of the Board of Trustees.  Read more.

From Barbara Eaves: I once told Herbert Allen that I owned a Screwpull and I liked it so much that I’d broken it.  He said, “You broke it?  Do you still have the pieces?”  I did.  And I sent them to him - he wanted to see why it had broken.  And he sent me two in return.  I still have one of them.  It must be better made, because I sure haven’t started drinking less!
