On January 10, 1857, Captain James A Baker, the namesake of Baker College, was born in Huntsville, Texas.  This week, Rice baseball is playing a two-game series against Sam Houston State.

Also, last night, his grandson, James A Baker III, was the subject of a PBS documentary entitled “James Baker: The Man Who Made Washington Work”.  Read more.

John Boles '65, who received the Meritorious Service Award in 1991, the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2004 and the Gold Medal in 2012, is the only ARA Triple Crown Winner. The 2015 Laureates dinner will be Saturday, May 16.  Read more.

“Big Jim” McConaughey, the father of Academy Award winner Matthew McConaughey, was a two-year University of Houston football letterman (151-52).  Last night, the Cougars defeated the Owls, 8-3, at Cougar Field.  And, on May, 15, Matthew will give the UH commencement address at TDECU Stadium.  Read more.
