Sir Konstantin Novoselov:
Nobel laureate lectures during visit to Rice (Rice News)

Molly Dolan (1974 - 2017):
On January 7, Molly Dolan passed away.  A native of Alaska, she graduated from Rice in 1996 with a BA in English and from the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign with a Master’s in 2004.  She worked in Dallas, New York, Champaign and finally in West Virginia as the Digital Initiatives and Scholarly Communications Librarian at WVU.  Also, she was a world traveler.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Marie-Lynn Miranda:
Last month, Houston Woman Magazine named Rice Provost Marie Lynn Miranda one of “Houston’s 50 Most Influential Women of 2016”.  Recently, she was interviewed by Rice Magazine here.

Walter Buenger '73 (Thanks, Barbara Eaves!):
Walter Buenger ’73 is the Chief Historian of the Texas State Historical Association effective July 1, 2017, with duties to edit the Southwestern Historical Quarterly.  Also, he assumes the Summerlee Foundation Chair in Texas History/Barbara Stuart Centennial Professorship in Texas History at the University of Texas Austin.  On June 1, 2017, he leaves Texas A&M after 38 years.

Kenneth Kurtz (1934 - 2017):
On  March 17, Kenneth Kurtz passed away.  A native Texan, he attended Rice (class of 1956) and graduated from UH with an Industrial Engineering degree in 1957.  After working for several manufacturing companies, he started his own company, Houston Foam Plastics, in 1970.  Also, he was active in the community and in his church.  He is predeceased by, among others, his wife Mary Lou.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

It looks like astronaut Shannon Walker ’87/’92/’93 will be returning to space next year.  Read more.

Dr. Grady Hallman (1930 - 2017):
On January 13, Dr Grady Hallman passed away.  A native Texan, he was a senior cardiovascular surgeon, a consultant and an educator in Houston.  Also, he was an accomplished musician and a member of the Board of Governors of the Shepherd School.  Click here for the Tyler Morning Telegraph obituary.

A Message from ARA President Shannon Vale ‘77 (Rice News)

Clyde Mayo (1940 - 2017):
On March 11, Clyde Mayo passed away.  A native Texan, he earned undergraduate degrees from Rice (1961) and UH (1964), a MS in Clinical Psychology from Trinity University (1966) and a PhD in Industrial/Organization Psychology from UH (1972).  He enjoyed a career as a licensed PhD Psychologist.  Also, he was active in Rice Alumni Affairs and in his church.  He is survived by, among others, his wife of 54 years, Jeanne.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

11 graduate programs rank among top 25 (Rice News)

Inez Benson Mims (1923 - 2017):
On March 12, Inez Benson Mims passed away.  A native of Oklahoma, she and her late husband Joseph Mims graduated in absentia in 1943 and were among the WWII era graduates who walked at Commencement ’98.  Read more.

After the war, Joseph worked for Shell for over 40 years.  Inez “was the organizer and conscience for her large family as she managed transfers to many (Shell) locations”, with “her focus on education and faith”.  Accordingly, she was active in her church.

In addition to her late husband of 72 years, Joseph ’43, three sons are Rice grads including Joe (WRC’70), Don (WRC’76/’77), and Peter (WRC’78/’79), as well as two daughters-in-law, Don’s wife, Martha Pritchett Mims (Jones’78/’83), and Peter’s wife, Martha Ramos Mims (Hanszen’79).

The funeral service will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Sugar Land, 502 Eldridge Road, on Saturday, March 18, at 1:30 pm, preceded by a reception in the fellowship hall at noon.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Cook joins Public Affairs team as government relations director (Rice News)

Dr Loyd Swenson (1932 - 2016): 
On December 25, 2016, Dr Loyd Swenson passed away.  A third generation Texan, he earned a BA from Rice in 1954 and graduate degrees from Claremont College.  He taught his entire career at the University of Houston and he was an author and NASA historian.  Also, he was active in his church.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.
