CP Buster Sullivan (1960 - 2015):
On June 26, CP Buster Sullivan passed away in San Antonio.  A native Houstonian, he graduated from Milby High School and from Rice in 1963 where he was a one-year basketball letterman (1960).  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Remembering Dan Weiser '54 by Fred Sklar '56:
“In addition to his academic achievements, Dan Weiser was a member of the varsity Rice Fencing team in 1950 which was a Southwest Conference sport but then went dormant until his senior year in 1954 when the sport was reinstated by the Conference and he lettered on that team which he helped to start and which ultimately beat A&M and UT in 1956 to win the Conference championship”.

Remembering Dan Weiser '54 by John Wolda '56:
“Dan Weiser was my math tutor.  Probably the toughest job he ever had.  I did pass.”

Dan Weiser (1933 - 2015):
On June 20, Dan Weiser passed away.  A native Missourian, he earned a BA (1954), a Masters (1956) and a PhD (1958) from Rice, all in Mathematics.  He enjoyed a very successful career as a mathematician with Mobil Oil in Dallas.  Also, social activism and community service were central to his life.  He is survived by, among others, his wife of 61 years, Louette ’55.  Click here for the Dallas Morning News obituary.

Observatory open tonight for Jupiter-Venus conjunction (Rice News)

Bettye Mathis Alexander (1929 - 2015):
On June 11, Bettye Alexander passed away after a long illness.  A native Houstonian, she attended Rice (class of 1949), married Thomas Alexander in 1945 and moved to Pearland in 1949.  For over 50 years, she was a realtor and managing partner with her husband and son in their real estate investment management company.  Also, she was very involved with the public libraries and the public schools.  Click here for The Pearland Journal obituary.

Douglas Gooselaw  (1944 - 2015):
On June 17, Douglas Gooselaw passed away.  A native Minnesotan, he earned a BA in German and English from Bemidji State in 1966 and a MA in German from Rice in 1968.  He enjoyed a teaching career at Benedict College in South Carolina, a community college near Houston and USC before returning to Montana to take care of his parents in their declining years.  Also, he was active in the community.  Click here for the Bozeman Daily Chronicle obituary.

Daniel Cortez '15:
Cortez wins Powell award (The Rice Thresher)

Ruth Rote Urmy (1926 - 2015):
On April 13, Ruth Urmy passed away.  A native Coloradoan, she was a Reagan HS Redcoat, she married in 1946 and she graduated from Rice in 1960.  She worked for the State of Texas Welfare Department for 28 years.  She is predeceased by, among others, her husband of 59 years, Kenneth.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Tevin Vongvanich ’82 has been appointed CEO of PTT Pcl, Thailand’s biggest energy firm and largest listed company.  Read more.

Peter Moller (1938 - 2015):
On June 14, Peter Moller passed away.  A native Houstonian, he earned a BS from UH in 1965 and a PhD in Biology from Rice in 1971. He was a member of the faculty at UTMB Galveston from 1975 until he retired in 2003.  Also, he was a man of many interests.  He is survived by, among others, his wife of 51 years, Carolyn.  Click here for The Friendswood Journal obituary.

James Coleman:
James Coleman chosen as Northern Arizona provost (NAU News)

Valerie White Fite (1918 - 2015):
On June 4, Valerie White Fite passed away after just celebrating her 97th birthday.  A native Houstonian, she was a member of the first graduating class of Kinkaid and she earned a BA in English from Rice in 1939.  She was active in the community with the Junior League, Blue Bird Circle and the Southern Garden Club.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.
