HG Whittington MD:
On April 6, HG Whittington passed away at the age of 86.  Born on Galveston Island, he graduated from Rice in 1948 with a BA in Biology and from Baylor College of Medicine in 1952.  Also, he completed psychiatric training at the Menninger Clinic.  He was a psychiatrist for over 50 years, in the private, public and non-profit realms of practice.  His “enduring interests were archaeology, gardening, reading and photography".  Click here for The Arizona Republic obituary.

Albert Johs (1917 - 2015:
On April 12, Albert Johns passed away.  He attended Rice (class of 1939) and served in the military from 1941 until 1961.  Then, he enjoyed a 22 year second career with the Texas Employment Commission and retired in 1984.  Also, he was active in the community, he enjoyed growing orchids with his wife and he was an avid traveler.  Click here for the Austin American-Statesman obituary.

National Academy of Sciences:
Richards-Kortum, Vardi elected to National Academy of Sciences (Rice News)

Curtis Harrison (1926 - 2015):
On April 10, Curtis Harrison passed away.  A native Coloradoan, he graduated from Rice in 1947 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and later earned a MBA.  After military service, he was employed by US Steel for 20 years and Bechtel International for 24 years.   He and his wife of 69 years Deanne raised 5 children.  At the time of his death, he had 32 grandchildren and 66 great grandchildren.  Click here for the Deseret News obituary.

Sidney Jones (1933 - 2015):
On April 22, Sidney Jones passed away.  A native Houstonian, he graduated from Rice in 1955 where he pitched on the baseball team.  He was a high school teacher and coach and then enjoyed a second career in medical sales.  Also, he was active in his church.  He is survived by, among others, his wife of 62 years, Carolyn.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Miriam Martin:
On April 9, Miriam Martin passed away at the age of 94.  A native Houstonian, she graduated from Rice in 1950 and moved to southern California with her family where she became a social worker specializing in adoptions.  Eight years ago, she and her husband moved to Georgia to be closer to their son.  Click here for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution obituary.

William Drake (1932 - 2015):
On April 3, William Drake passed away.  A native Illinoisan, he earned a BS in Chemical Engineering from Rice in 1955 and a Masters in International Business from the University of Detroit in 1966.  He enjoyed a career in sales, traveling around the world selling chemical products and later food service equipment.  Also, he was active in his church.  He is survived by, among others, his wife of 63 years, Cynthia.  Click here for the Times-News obituary.

Lucille Germany (1925 - 2015):
On March 11, Lucille Germany passed away.  Born in New Jersey, she graduated from Rice in 1944 with a BA in Biology.  She pursued graduate studies in Journalism at Columbia University and studied law at South Texas College of Law.  She was the long time editor of the Texas Churchman (Texas Episcopalian).  Also, she was a master gardener and was active in her church.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

On April 5, Calla Maurice Johnson passed away.  A native Texan, she graduated from Rice in 1948.  She worked for the First Presbyterian Church in Lufkin, the Texas Forest Service and the US Forest Service, retiring in 1982.  Also, she was active in the community.  Click here for The Lufkin Daily News obituary.

On Tuesday, Transocean Ltd. named four-year Rice football letterman Jeremy Thigpen (1993-94-95-96) President and CEO.  Previously, he was National Oilwell Varco CFO. 

George Burt (1929 - 2015):
On March 28, George Burt passed away.  He was an accomplished composer and a Professor of Music at Smith College, the University of Michigan and Rice.  Click here for the San Francisco Chronicle obituary.
