Nine works from Kathryn Dunlevie’s new series ‘The Taxidermist’s Imaginarium’ will be exhibited at FotoFest 2018 at Hooks-Epstein Galleries from February 24 to March 31.  The complete series can be viewed here.

Preservation Houston:
On March 2, Preservation Houston will hold its Cornerstone Dinner to honor Bob Eury ’77 and to present the 2018 Good Brick Awards.  Bob will receive the 2018 President’s Award “for his visionary dedication to downtown revitalization”.  One of the Good Brick Awards will go to Ben Koush ‘02 for his book, “Constructing Houston’s Future: The Architecture of Arthur Evan Jones and Lloyd Morgan Jones”.  Read more.

Neil Degrasse Tyson:
Last night, Neil deGrasse Tyson, the husband of Alice Young ’79. was in town to deliver a lecture at Jones Hall.  Read more.

Lilie Lecture, January 18:
Next up will be Casper Mattress co-founder and CEO Phillip Krim at 4 pm on Thursday at the Liu Idea Lab for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (Cambridge Office Building).  The topic of his speech is “Reimagining E-Commerce and the Sleep Industry”.  The event is free and open to the public but please RSVP.   Read more.

Alex Greenwood (1938-2018):
On January 6, Alex Greenwood passed away.  A native Houstonian, he graduated from Rice in 1961.  Other family members who graduated from Rice include his late father Dr. James Greenwood, Jr. ’37, his brother Jim Greenwood ’58 and his wife Barbara Moore Greenwood ’62.  After serving in the Navy and working in Houston, he relocated to Palo Alto in 1973 where he enjoyed a career in Silicon Valley for 44 years, “holding a series of finance and management positions for high technology firms”.  His three biggest passions were “photography, world travel, and time with his wife”.  He had just retired in September.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary

Robert Manning (1940-2018):
On January 3, Roberta Manning passed away.  A native Texan, she earned a BA from Rice in 1962 and a PhD from Columbia in 1975, both in History.  She was “a noted academic who was a Professor of History at Boston College for over 30 years”.  She “will be remembered for her keen intelligence and scholarship, her dedication to her students, her passionate spirit, and her boundless generosity to many”.  Click here for The Newton Tab obituary

Shepherd School to host annual Family Concert Jan 20 (Rice News)

Carolyn Billingsley (1948-2018):
On January 2, Carolyn Billingsley passed away.  At the age of 41and after her children were grown, she decided to go to college and she earned an undergraduate degree from UA-Little Rock and a MA (1999) and a PhD (2001) from Rice, both in History.  She was a founding member of the Saline County History and Heritage Society.  She is survived by, among others, her husband of 51 years, James.  Click here for The Saline Courier obituary.

Jerry Fleming (1934-2017):
On December 21, Jerry Fleming passed away.  A native Texan, he graduated from Rice in 1958.  He “devoted his skills to being a coach, a teacher, and a high school administrator”.  He is survived by, among others, his wife of 64 years Evelyn.  Click here for the Austin American-Statesman obituary.

Dorothy Turner (1929-2017):
On Christmas morning, Dorothy Turner passed away.  Raised in Houston, she attended Rice (class of 1951).  She was “a loving wife and mother and an adoring grandmother” and she was active in her church in her younger years.  She is survived by, among others, her husband of 67 years Pat.  Click here for the Corpus Christi Caller Times obituary.
