Houston's Best and Brightest Minds:
Of the Chronicle’s six Houston Best and Brightest Minds, three have ties to Rice: David Eagleman ’93, Eriz Aiden who is an assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Sciences and Computational and Applied Mathematics at Rice and Wes Anderson, the son of Texas Anderson ‘81/’85.

Rev Donald Starkey (1922 - 2016):
On January 1, Rev Donald Starkey passed away.  A native Illinoisan, he earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Rice in 1947 after military service in WWII.  In 1952, he completed his seminary studies in Rome and was ordained for service in the Diocese of Galveston-Houston.  In 1966, he was transferred to service in the Archdiocese of Santa Fe.  Click here for the Albuquerque Journal obituary.

Mary Micheletti (1949 - 2016):
On January 6, Mary Micheletti passed away.  She graduated from Rice in 1971 where she met her future husband Gil Micheletti ’69.  They were married for 44 years and raised 2 sons and she was devoted to her family.  Also, she was active in the community.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Juliet Stipeche '96:
Turner names former HISD board member as his education czar (Houston Chronicle)

John Lam PhD:
On December 9, Dr. John Lam passed away.  A native of Hong Kong, he earned degrees in physics from Rice (1962) and Cal Tech (1967).  He was most recently employed by Boeing.  Click here for The Seattle Times obituary.

Baker Institute Among Top Ranked (Rice News)

Mary Shaffer (1921 - 2016):
On January 5, Mary Shaffer passed away.  A native Texan, she graduated from Rice in 1943 with a BA in English.  She worked as an educator for the Lubbock Independent School District.  Also, she was active in the community. Click here for The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal obituary.

Juliet Stipeche '96:
Yesterday, Mayor Turner named Juliet Stipeche ’96 as the City of Houston’s first Director of Education.  Read more 

Harry Badger (1922 - 2015):
On December 30, Harry Badger passed away.  A native Houstonian, he received a BS in Electrical Engineering from Rice in 1944.  A WWII veteran, he enjoyed a “long and distinguished” career as an electrical engineer and PE with Lockwood Andrews and Newman until he retired in the mid 90s.  Also, he was active in the community and in his church.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Joanne Baker (1932 - 2016):
On January 2, Joanne Baker passed away.  Her late husband was Lovett Baker whose two grandfathers were Capt. James A. Baker and Edgar Odell Lovett.  She “loved Rice University and was instrumental in the early development of RIPA (Rice Institute for Policy Analysis)”.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Marion Kisling (1927 - 2015):
On December 27, Marion Kisling passed away.  A native Alabamian, she graduated Cum Laude from Rice in 1946 where she met her late husband James Kisling III ‘47.  They lived in the Houston area where she raised a family.  After retiring in Kingwood, she was active in the community and she enjoyed traveling the world.  Click here for The Kingwood Observer obituary

Deputy Mayor Andy Kopplin ’88, who was Baker College president in 1988, was named a semifinalist for the president’s post at the University of New Orleans.  Read more.

William Fagan MD (1930 - 2016):
On January 24, Dr William “Bill” Fagan passed away.  A native Houstonian, he graduated from Rice in 1952 where he lettered in track and field.  In 1957, he earned a medical degree from UT Dallas. After military service, he enjoyed a private medical practice until he retired in 1987.  Also, he was active in the community.  Click here for the obituary.
