Raymond Devine (1928 - 2015):
On July 22, Raymond Devine passed away after a long illness.  A native Houstonian, he graduated with honors from Rice in 1950 following military service in WWII.   After working as a CPA for several years, he enjoyed a career in the sulphur industry, retiring at the age of 58.  Click here for the Austin American-Statesman obituary.

Kathryn Pulley Respess (1939 - 2015):
On July 16, Kathryn Pulley Respess passed away.  She graduated from Rice (Phi Beta Kappa and Woodrow Wilson Fellow) in 1961.  At Rice, she met John Respess ‘60/’63 whom she married in 1964. She enjoyed a stellar 50 year teaching career at St Stephen’s Episcopal School in Austin.  Also, she was an influential environmentalist..  She is predeceased by, among others, her husband John who died in 2014.  Click here for the Austin American-Statesman obituary.

Stephen Richard Ganns (1950 - 2015):
On July 16, Stephen Richard Ganns passed away.  A native Texan, he graduated from UT.  He enjoyed a career in the commercial real estate business in Houston however his true devotion was to music, as a composer and pianist.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Stephen Richard Ganns Memorial Fund at the Shepherd School.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Jack Burns (1926 - 2015):
On July 10, Jack Burns passed away.  A native Houstonian, he graduated from Rice with a BS in Chemical Engineering in 1949 and a MS in Chemical Engineering in 1951, following military service in WWI from 1944-46.  He enjoyed a career with Texaco for 39 years.  Also, he was active in the community.  He is survived by, among others, his wife of 62 years, Lorraine.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Raymond Archer (1931 - 2015):
On June 28, Raymond Archer passed away.  A native Canadian, he earned a BA from the University of Alberta in 1963 and a PhD from Rice in 1973, both in Philosophy.  He was a member of the University of Alberta faculty for 25 years.  Click here for the Leader-Post News obituary.

Larry Phillips '64:
Larry Phillips ’64, a three-year basketball letterman (1962-63-64), is retiring as president of Angelina College in East Texas after 24 years of service.  Read more.

Marianne Colburn Young (1951 - 2015):
On June 27, Marianne Colburn Young passed away.  A native Houstonian, she graduated from Rice with a BA in Chemistry in 1974.  She worked for Dow Chemical and then she and her husband Gregg formed their own corporation, Young Associates.  Also, she was an avid technology user.  She is survived by, among others, her husband of 42 years.  Click here for the Midland Daily News obituary.

Brian Schostak (1962 - 2015):
On June 28, Brian Schostak passed away at the age of 52.  After graduation from Ohio State, he worked for Shell Oil until his death.  He was the father of former Rice baseball player Brian Smith.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.

Saving preemies in developing countries (Houston Chronicle)

Alicia Arciniega (1967 - 2015):
On June 30, Alicia “Lisa” Arciniega passed away after a battle against lymphoma.  A native Houstonian, she graduated from Rice in 1991 with a BS in Biology and Psychology.  She worked at Microbiology Labs and later on the cancer research teams of MD Anderson Cancer Center.  Click here for the Chronicle obituary.
