Former Rice All-America end Froggy Williams, who passed away last Tuesday, kicked the sole field goal of his collegiate career – as time expired – to lift the Owls to a 17-15 win over Texas on October 22, 1949.   The kick and celebration are shown at the end of this “In Memorium” video by Chuck Pool

Robert Penn Warren
(Vanderbilt’ 25) is the only person to have won Pulitzer Prizes for both fiction and poetry. He received the 1947 Pulitzer Price for the Novel for his novel All the King’s Men (1946) and the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1958 and 1979.

On Tuesday night, Virginia defeated Vanderbilt to win the College World Series championship.

Dr. Edgar Odell Lovett, who served as Rice president from 1907 to 1946, earned his first doctorate degree at the University of Virginia (in Astronomy) in 1895.  His dissertation was entitled “The great inequality of Jupiter and Saturn”.

Tonight, Virginia and Vanderbilt play a decisive third game for the College World Series championship.
